Bicycling

There are many options for people who want to see Hawaii from two wheels. You might want to trek down the side of a volcano or just enjoy the scenery from the many bike lanes on the island. Hawaii is a bike-rider friendly state.

Oahu

Cycling is a popular activity, particularly in the Diamond Head, Ala Moana Beach Park, and North Shore areas. Various reputable operations offer bicycles and camping gear for rent throughout Oahu. Maui

Since 1991, Maui County has been building bicycle lanes on all its major roads. Bikers can now cycle from Wailea to Kapalua, from Hookipa to Kahului and from Waiehu to Wailuku on improved shoulders or bike lanes. Visitors can unload their bikes at the airport and cycle to their hotels. Maui supports biking with much enthusiasm.

Haleakala Bike Company’s Bike Down a Volcano, only $39 for their Haleakala Express, or $59 for their Sunrise Special. Mountain bike at your own pace, with no crowds to follow or timetable to keep. Meet at the bike shop in the old Haiku Cannery and take the courtesy van up to Haleakala National Park. Maui Downhill Bicycle Safaris offer you expert mountain guides that will give you the bicycle adventure of a lifetime! Kauai

West

Kokee State Park: Ecology-oriented mountain bike tours available through Outfitters Kauai 808 742-9667. This 16-mile tour is the only guided mountain bike trip licensed to operate off paved roads in any of Hawaii’s state parks.

Molokai

Flat, wide roads with little traffic mean terrific traveling for mountain bikes, which are ideal for exploring the more that 50 miles of mountain bike trails on the west end. Equipment rentals and transportation needs, can be arranged.
